The WiFi saga continues

We think we have proved that the dodgy electricity from the petrol generator is was making the AP freak out.

The HQ AP was on and working all morning and the UPS was not beeping until we plugged another laptop in to recharge. The AP continued to work but the UPS was beeping, so we think that we are right on the line for what the generator can kick out. So the current fix is to try and keep as much turned off as possible. When ever the UPS beeps everyone runs about unplugging stuff, good times.

Our trusty generator.

So now that the power is sorted we have noticed that the Windows XP laptops keep dropping the WiFi connection every few seconds. Everyone has been blaming this on the AP, but now we think that is fixed we were stumped as to why things weren't working. It was even more of a mystery because the Mac and Linux boxes were all working fine. Finally when poking around in Windows I noticed that the WiFi is cycling between a 54mb and a 11mb connection.

This looks like it is switching between the B and the G network that the AP is providing. Don't ask me why it is set up to be B and G (I did not chose these settings) . So the current fix is to use an Ethernet connection for all Windows boxes until we can fiddle with the wireless again tomorrow. I had to run a bunch of Ethernet cable to make this work.
